Government employment, education, and the judiciary anchor Prayagraj's economy more than most Indian cities its size. The Allahabad High Court — the judicial capital of Uttar Pradesh — employs thousands of lawyers, clerks, and support staff, making legal services a genuine career path here. Central and state government offices, along with institutions like the University of Allahabad and IIT Allahabad, provide stable white-collar work. Real estate and financial services have grown since 2000, but private-sector tech or startup jobs are scarce. Remote workers are the realistic expat earners here.

A one-bedroom in the city center runs around $200/month, which is genuinely low even by Indian standards. Local transport is auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws — functional but chaotic, and Uber/Ola coverage is inconsistent. Healthcare is a real concern: private hospitals exist but serious conditions will send you to Lucknow or Delhi. Hindi is non-negotiable; English gets you through university areas but almost nowhere else. Bureaucracy for visa extensions or residency paperwork is slow and Hindi-language-heavy, so budget time and a local fixer.

Summers hit 45°C and are brutal from May through June. Winters are genuinely pleasant — cool, dry, and clear from November to February, which is when the city is most livable. Food is excellent and cheap: thali meals under $1, strong street food culture around chaat and lassi. The expat community is tiny — mostly academics and NGO workers — so don't expect a ready-made social network. Weekends mean the Sangam ghats, temple circuits, or day trips to Varanasi. This city suits academics, long-term India hands, or FIRE retirees who want ultra-low costs and don't need English-language infrastructure.
