Bossangoa, Central African Republic, is a town with a troubled recent history. Located 303 km north of Bangui, it sits along the Ouham River, which flows through waterfalls east of the city. The Mandjia, the country’s third-largest ethnic group, are concentrated here, but communal violence between Muslims and Christians has driven much of the population away. In 2014, Bossangoa was described as a ghost town, with charred houses and abandoned buildings still marking the scars of conflict.

Electricity arrived in 1970, but infrastructure remains limited. The town’s population, once around 50,000, has dwindled to just over 37,000.
