This highland city in Santa Catarina's interior runs on cattle and timber money, with a climate cooler than most of Brazil. Winters get chilly enough that the Festa do Pinhão (a pine nut festival) actually makes sense here. The Carahá River cuts through town, but don't expect waterfront cafes—this is a working-class place where expats stand out.

Living in Lages means dealing with limited international flights (you'll connect through Correia Pinto's regional airport) and a Portuguese-heavy environment where English won't get you far. The economy revolves around slaughterhouses and lumber mills, not digital nomad hubs. But if you want Brazilian cost of living without tropical heat, it's one of few options.
