It is a place where the river actively takes.

Living in Chilmāri means accepting that infrastructure and services scale to a population of roughly 131,715—which is to say, they are minimal. Medical emergencies require travel to larger towns; English is not spoken outside rare tourist contexts; and the erosion threat means property ownership carries genuine physical risk. Expats in Chilmāri are vanishingly rare, and for good reason. This city suits only those with specific ties to the region, fluency in Bengali, and tolerance for genuine hardship.
